The steps below will help you to make 3 of your own kitchen sponges that can be reused over and over again and the best part is you can find fabrics of all colors and styles to make these sponges the perfect fit for you and your kitchen.
The skill level for this project is beginner so this is the perfect crafting project for all! The best part is that this is a really savvy project that will provide you with amazing cleaning sponges to use in your kitchen for just about $.91 a sponge (each ¼ yard can make 3 sponges) and the time to complete is about 15 to 20 minutes! I have just purchased a sewing machine as I have wanted to learn to sew and make my own everything… so here we go!
Make Your Own Reusable Scrubber Kitchen Sponge – makes 3
Supplies:
● ¼ yard mesh fabric ($0.97 per yard at Walmart = $0.25 per ¼ yard)
● ¼ yard cotton fabric ($6.99 per yard at Hobby Lobby = $1.75 per ¼ yard)
● ¼ yard cotton batting ($2.97 per yard at Walmart = $0.74 per ¼ yard)
● Sewing Machine
● Matching thread
● Fabric marking pen
● Sewing pins or clips
● Scissors
● Turning tool
● Cutting mat and ruler, measuring tape or rulerInstructions:
Step 1: Cut (2) 4 ½” x 6” pieces from your cotton fabric and mesh fabric. You can choose your own patterns here to suit your tastes and style so be picky! For the cotton batting, cut 2-4 pieces, depending on how thick you want your sponge to be.
Step 2: On a flat work surface, layer your pieces as follows: one piece of cotton right side up, the two pieces of mesh next, the other piece of cotton right side facing down and the cotton batting on top. Pin or clip the layers together.
Steps 3-4: Using a 3/8” seam allowance, sew all the layers together, leaving a 3-4” gap for turning on one of the long sides. Clip the corners to remove bulk, being careful not to clip through the stitching.
Steps 5-6: Using your turning tool, turn right side out between the mesh layers and push out the corners. Tuck in the raw edges of the opening and pin or clip closed.
Step 7: Topstitch around the entire sponge. Next, topstitch around the sponge again 1/4-inch to the left from the first topstitch line.
When your sponge is dirty, toss in the washing machine with a load of towels and dry on low.
So what do you think of this fabulous DIY project that allows you to make the perfect sponges to use for cleaning your dishes, sink and more?
